Why a Community Foundation?

Do you care deeply about something you wish to change?
We can help make your philanthropic dreams a reality!

We are a community foundation, a charitable organization founded by generous donors like you to benefit our community. When we work together, we become stronger and have a greater impact! When you give to SCF, you are collaborating with others who are passionate about making Greater Sudbury the best it can be!

These gifts are carefully invested and the earnings returned to the community, year after year. Because the principal is never spent, over time much more than the value of the endowments are returned to local charities. This is a sensible and distinctive way to ensure sustainability in Greater Sudbury. And, it is truly an effective way to support the Greater Sudbury community as a whole!

No matter what you’re passionate about, you can support it through Sudbury Community Foundation!

We know our community and our local charities. We understand their challenges and the pressing needs they face. The Foundation can work effectively with you and your financial planner to incorporate charitable giving into your estate plans in a way that maximizes its value.

Established in 1996 with the support of then Regional Chair,
Tom Davies, an initial gift of $60,000 from the Regional Municipality of Sudbury established the Sudbury Regional Tree Fund.  With that gift, the Foundation’s Board began the task to raise a substantial endowment fund for the community.  Today, our Fund is close to $5 Million and continues to grow. Most importantly, the Foundation has distributed over one million in grants since these humble beginnings.

Your community foundation continues to be led by passionate volunteers and staff with the vision and skills to inspire philanthropy that benefits our community, now and forever!

What We Do

The Sudbury Community Foundation is an independent public foundation and registered charity. The Foundation has been a gateway to the community since 1996, enabling donors to create philanthropic legacies that will benefit Sudbury and its people both now and in the future. The Foundation's unique combination of grant-making expertise, knowledge of community needs, professional financial and fund management expertise, and knowledge of donor philanthropy, provides donors with a higher impact for every dollar donated. In addition, it gives local charities access to a permanent flow of grant dollars.

SCF's approach aims to create positive and lasting changes in Sudbury by addressing diverse needs across education, youth development, health, social services, environment, arts, culture, seniors' support, inclusion, diversity, community building, non-profit support, leadership, and emergency response. Through strategic grant-making and community engagement, the foundation empowers Sudbury to build a stronger, more resilient community, fostering a sense of belonging and collaboration, while ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for all residents.

Foundational Expertise: Our staff and Board of Directors have expert knowledge in planned giving options, professional fund administration and management, grant making and assessment. Our Board and Investment Committee are independent senior community leaders with expertise in taxation, accounting, law, business, and philanthropy. We are supported by the community and are part of a national network of 191 community foundations under the umbrella group, Community Foundations of Canada.

Convenient One-Stop Administration: We provide all-inclusive stewardship to our individual and corporate donors including simplified record-keeping, tax return preparation, fund administration, preparation of personalized and mutually agreed-upon fund agreements, and in-house generation of charitable tax receipts for our donors.

Community Engagement: We keep informed of trends and issues in our community through leadership efforts like our annual Vital Signs report, a community check-up. In turn, this report informs our granting, allowing us to grant to the most pressing community needs. We also stimulate community engagement by delivering a five-month leadership development program, Emerging Leaders, for young professionals in Greater Sudbury. It is our goal for the program to encourage community leadership and advocacy, not just for the future but for the now as well.
